Quorum of 70 member uses his church email address to ask for donations to Romney campaign

"W. Craig Zwick, a member of the church’s First Quorum of the Seventy, was in Las Vegas as part of a fundraising blitz for the Romney campaign when he got into an email exchange about setting up a golf date with an acquaintance in Salt Lake City.

"I’m down in Vegas helping Mitt Romney today," Zwick, whose son Spencer is Romney’s finance chairman, wrote from his church email address. "How much can you contribute to the Romney for President Committee today? You can only give $2,500 max for you and your wife. Let me know — let’s take back America!"

Anyone know who to send this to so the LDS tax-exempt status can be revoked?

That was sent right around the time of the church’s June 16, 2011 letter restating its policy on political participation, including this admonition: "General authorities and general officers of the church and their spouses and other ecclesiastical leaders serving full time should not personally participate in political campaigns, including promoting candidates, fundraising, speaking in behalf of or otherwise endorsing candidates, and making financial contributions."

Wow. I SO hope this goes viral. Let's take back, America!

The bigger deal isn't that he used his church e-mail to do this, but that he did it at all. Handbook is apparently really specific that church leaders and authorities aren't supposed to endorse candidates. If he was allowed to do this, then I'd give him a pass on a mix-up between church and personal e-mail accounts.

But really, it's just a personal e-mail to a friend. It exposes the lie that the church is neutral politically, and dude is probably going to be made emeritus on the next round because of it, but it's not like he was hitting the stake mailing list.

Someone at the IRS. Maybe there's some kind of compliance department for charitable organizations. I don't know what the rules are, but I wouldn't think this violates any of them. He'll just say it was personal sentiment that happened to be sent from his church email address.

What a fucking tool.

If they actually have millions of obedient members then let them form another militia and then try to "take back" the fucking country, else they're just a bunch of saber-rattling pussy wannabies.
