This little experience brought home the fact to me that TSCC is not really a church. It is a very successful for Profit Company. The corporation of the first presidency.
Every Sunday, every ward or branch in the United States counts the money, immediately sends information to SLC via the Internet, then the money is immediately deposited into a bank account bearing the name "Corporation of the President." Please correct me if I'm wrong - perhaps this changed since I used to do it 7 years ago.
What the organization does with all
the money? We will probably never know.
What we do
know about what they do with some
of the money isn't always very favorable or impressive - like the multi-billion dollar mall, for example, eh?
What's really strange (to me) is how the organization gets people to swear with an oath that they will give 100% of everything they have - including their money - to the organization. Discovering this type of behavior in an otherwise unknown society would reek of total weirdness - people would be appalled. Perhaps the organization relies on the temple ceremony as the "ultimate remedy" to keep the revenue flowing in: let satan threaten them with consequences of noncompliance, instill fear, then force them to swear with an oath to keep sending money.
Meanwhile, outside the temple, the organization continues to pound the message of "obedience = blessings" and "disobedience = misery."
Ya, whatever. They're rich, I'm not - guess who wins.
