Good article.

Of course, one thing to remember is that as soon as an official representative of any church receives written notice of your resignation, you are no longer a member of that church. It doesn't matter if they never acknowledge it or attempt to bully you into submission. Send a certified letter, with delivery confirmation and signature required, to the membership records office. Once you receive confirmation that the letter has been delivered, your membership is resigned.

Excellent article, and congratulations on getting published in "Salon". That's a very cool achievement. :)

I seem to remember that when several people here at FLAK did not receive a reply to their resignation letters, that they contacted a church official in SLC named Greg Dodge, who apparently is in charge of membership records. Maybe someone who already resigned will offer some information about that.

I did the whole Greg Dodge thing about 3? years ago...I had not trouble at all. I used a form letter at a site devoted to resigning from the mormon church but I can't even remember it by now. The entire thing took 3 weeks.

Greg Dodge is no longer with Membership Records.

Like I mentioned, the only thing that you have to do is send a letter with delivery confirmation (just so you can say for sure that the letter was delivered). All of the other bureaucracy is just their own internal bullshit that they use to try and make you feel like you're being a burden and that they have control of you until THEY decide to give it up. That's not how it works.

I will probably try and send a letter, with delivery confirmation. My only hesitation is that I am - finally - at a point where they no longer bother me, I don't want to open myself up to more harassment.

Thanks! I almost keeled over when I saw the e-mail from the editor, asking if they could use my article.
