I participated in an obstacle course mud run and we had to be bussed up to the ski hill where the vent was held. The races are popular and very much so with women. A lot of these women were strong, tattooed and had two earrings in there ears. And they were fastinistas, dressed to run in shorts, tank tops and it was very clear that they were in great shape. Watching the Olympics and see great competitive, strong and capable female athletes.

So..

We know TSCC is misogynist, patriarchal and tries to instill ideas of shame, no I mean modesty, in the minds of the YW and girls in Primary.

Sitting on the bus I just can't figure out why church leaders and their doctrine hate these women. My inarticulate gut tells me it has something to do with self hatred, the PH hate themselves and want to make women hate themselves too. Also, the PH can't have the relationships with women that they want, something that might meet their needs, so no one can.

Thoughts?

Weak men are terrified of strong women.

I have always felt all the bullshit forced on girls and women about modesty is about control. Keep the wimminfolk thinking that it is their fault if guys can't control their devilish impulses and thoughts. That way the guys don't have to take ownership.

How did the organization get where it is today? The ingredients of their doctrine came from a thirty something year old man who claims god commanded him to marry a fourteen year old, two sixteen year old's and women who were already married. The leader of the cult that came after wasn't any better. These men, and a few others, produced the core doctrine which is still the basis for most everything that's still going on today.

When you place many rancid, rotting hunks of animal flesh in a large pot, the soup will be forever doomed.

I'm convinced the top leadership of the organization fit primarily in two categories:

#1 - they know they are faking it, they realize they have no special powers - although many in this category appear to enjoy the power and prestige accompanying their elevated status and they realize they're boxed in

#2 - the childhood and lifelong indoctrination is seemingly tattooed on their brains with permanence - they still believe they really are god-inspired because the concept of reality, or anything contrary to what they've been told is "true" is too painful, scary or impossible for their distorted, otherwise rational thinking capabilities, to grasp.

Oh ... you asked the question all feminists WANT you to ask. You noticed. Kudos.

Why? Because it's about domination. In my feminist class at the U we discussed how images of women being sickeningly skinny is directly related to gender issues. We are socially constructed to think of skinny women as attractive. If a woman is skinny, small, fragile, she is easily dominated. If she is strong and independent - not so much.

If she is strong and independent? Then the general authorities (and all other priesthood leaders for that matter) just might find themselves doing their OWN damn laundry.

On a tangent note, I am now convinced this is why conservitive organizations such as the church do not like gays. It's not about morality issues: it's about preserving gender-assigned roles. If we have men occupying roles that are traditionally assumed by women, then these men challenge the inevitability of gender roles, meaning the suits can no longer claim that God assigned women to stay at home and take care of all things domestic. Again, they just might find themselves doing their own damn laundry....

One more thing - to be fair, the same thing happens to men. If you were to compare images of GI Joe several years back, he is muscled, but reasonably so. Now, the images held up for men is to have biceps bigger than tree trunks. As the images of women have gone the way of extreme emaciation, the images of men have gone the other extreme of incredible hulk. We are brainwashed to think that 'men dominating women' is sexy.

Even with muscled female athletes, the media portrays them as 'sex kittens'. They are frequently photographed posed in some sort of lingerie, rather than in uniform looking official and valid (as opposed to male athletes who are shown in uniform). The message is still that even if a woman is physically strong, her main purpose is to serve men sexually. Reduce her to something dominated.

I have several male friends that are small framed. They don't like these gender stereotypes, either.

Is that story about the PH dude buying his wife an iron real - someone actually told a story like that?

I searched but couldn't find it.

Thanks, I found the article . . . and TBM's literally consider this guy to be among the top 15 on god's elite team?

That article was DMOGFU (dear mother of god fucked up):
http://www.lds.org/general-conference/2006/10/let-us-be-men?lang=eng

I can't help but rewrite a portion of the article:
Quote:
One morning about a week before the surgery, my father gathered all of his sons into the living room. There he demonstrated to us the proper way to iron our clothes. You can see this would completely eliminate ironing for my mother (of which there was a great deal in our family of five boys). During the years after the operation, Mother often expressed gratitude for these men in her family and their willingness to pitch in and help out. This experience of ironing was just the beginning as we all also learned to cook, wash dishes, wash clothing, shop for groceries and clean the house. We learned useful skills but most important, this gave all of us a genuine appreciation for how much our mother had been serving our family. As mother gradually returned to normal health, we all continued our roles in sustaining each other, grateful to provide our own share of family responsibilities. We always took pride in doing our part, making sure everyone was well fed, wore clean clothes and enjoyed the comfort of living in a clean house.

Strong is the new skinny?

I know you were discussing this in respect to women, but what about all the Arnold Friberg paintings?
