I keep seeing this shit. Of course, no one who posts it can back up the hyperbole with actual facts. So, I went searching and heres what I found.
Yes, there's 3500 acres of land along the border in the Bueos Aires Wildlife Refuge that the US Fish and Wildlife Service has warned people to avoid because of the drug trafficking. It hasn't been "closed" or "ceded back to Mexico" as some people have claimed. It isn't a good idea to go there, but there aren't guards on the roads keeping you out. Yes, there are serious drug trafficking problems along the border and up through Altar Valley that the government doesn't seem to want to address, but I am fed up with how sound bites turn people into blithering idiots. I mean, we stopped going down to Buenos Aires in about 2000 because of the problems. This isn't a recent development! Jesus Christ, I wish people would do some research before posting and forwarding this shit.
