Howdy folks. I've been lurking for a few weeks, then started posting yesterday so I figure I should be polite and introduce myself.

I joined the church at age 10 with my mother, thanks to some faithful young elders, and managed to stay active for the next 27 years. I have run the gamut of church life events - FT mission, married in temple, 5 children, numerous callings & assignments, etc.

My fall into DAMU status is fairly unremarkable. I guess I started sliding years ago. I slowly grew to resent the drain that church activity placed upon my family and me. Especially for my wife, as I watched the physical and mental stress of bearing more children than she could handle, managing the household matters, and serving as RS pres and other stuff that have broken lesser people.

It also helped that I had started questioning and re-examining almost everything that I thought and believed. I had become so appalled at the opinions and behavior of people around me, that I wanted to make sure that I truly studied out life's important questions instead of just choosing a viewpoint and settling into comfortable bigotry for the rest of my life.

So when I decided in late 2009 to start looking into the church history that I had been wanting to study, along with the normal list of sensitive topics, I found that I could no longer believe in many of the foundational teachings of the church. As so many wise people have already stated, everything makes such perfect sense when you accept that Joseph Smith perpetrated one of the greatest frauds in modern times.

I discussed my position with DW shortly after Christmas. She took it fairly hard, but has been very loving and supportive since then. I informed the bish and SP that I would no longer be able to serve in my leadership calling, so I am looking forward to jettisoning that baggage this weekend. I am now looking forward to a life filled with activities of my own choosing, rather than the imposed busy work of the church. I'm sure they'll squeeze a few more hours of service out of me, as I will support the missus as best I can, but that's no big deal for me.

I just want to let each and every one of you know that I love you very much <sniff>.... Sorry, I thought I was in testimony meeting for a second. Let me just say that I look forward to being a part of your colorful, irreverent community.

Cheers

Welcome to FLAK, where you never have to beware of Jabberwocks, Bandersnatchi, or Jubjub birds.

Oh shit, one of those nefarious, literary newb types. Glad you made it, welcome and all sorts of extra hyperbole.

Btw, you get 397 bonus points for referencing the poem you did. Nicely done. I had to memorize that thing for English class oh so many years ago in the school of high.

Thanks, guys. I'm feeling the love here already.

I'm not sure what Dawgma means about "literary." I was trying to think of a handle, when I glanced over at my special rock and an image like a piece of parchment appeared with "the morm rath" written on it. Usually that rock is only good for helping me find lost stuff, so I figured this must be a revelation of great import. I wonder what else I can coax out of that thing...

Do you sell these rocks, or is it a one-of-a-kind item?

Personally, I've got an invisible gremlin that follows me around and finds lost keys. That's all he's/she's/its really good at, so I could use a backup.

Welcome morm rath!

(just ridding Dawgma of his dreaded DOM status)

Big green hugs,

Froggie
