I participate in other sites/groups. But I sometimes feel like I have to behave or censor myself a little too much in those places. so i thought I'd give this a try when I need to cut loose or rant a bit.

I'm a multi-generational mormon who has officially been off the church records for a little over a year now. I was one of those "core" ward members who was in on everything that happened, who was such a "good influence" on those I served.

Now I and my family are having a lot of fun in the real world. My extended family and old church friends are not so happy about this, and there are occasions where we really piss each other off.

Giddy up.

Fuckin' A, dude. Bring it on. We're pretty open about it here.

Let it fly.

That wasn't a rant. Just need a place where I can do it.

If I've got anything to rant about lately, I think it's my frustration with believers who are oxygen deprived primarily due to their heads being enveloped by material normally only seen by their proctologists.

Even as a devout, committed believer, I could have a hypothetical conversation with someone about belief, or lack thereof, or evidence for or against a position. It wasn't threatening. If someone really, truly believes they have the truth, what could they possibly ever fear from examination?

If it's just a knee-jerk "I don't feel comfortable discussing that because I've been told not to" then all I feel is contempt. Not contempt for their intent, just contempt for their lack of courage and contempt for their lack of grey matter. New members, young members I can maybe give a bit of a pass. Lifers? There's just no excuse for the synaptic constipation.

And at the risk of offending a segment of the population here, I'm stunned at the general dumbassery of those who manage to jettison Joseph but who are unable to jump back from Jesus. They were both pretty cool, from various perspectives of the "get shit done" variety. But if you're able to say, "Prophet? No." you should have both the cranial wattage and scrotal payload to also say, "Son of god? Fuck, no." I'm not talking about finding fulfillment in a church community or faith tradition, I'm talking about rejecting the male bovine feces of literal belief in the associated miraculous claims.

I try to be nice, but when someone tells me, "You know, I've looked at all of that stuff and come to the opposite conclusion", I want to say, "That's because you're not very smart. I'm not that smart, and I figured it out. What the hell's the matter with you?" I just feel stupid that it took me so long to look.

Instead I say something socially palatable like, "At least you looked. You're ahead of the herd on that one." And I hate myself for it because then I have to reserve a little of that contempt for myself.

Good stuff! Cathartic to read, and full of descriptive terms I haven't seen before. Welcome :)
