I     bel & silly.

This is one of the reasons why serious scholarship in the humanities is actually important. The humanities are all about creating life-time hermeneutics, the frameworks through which we perceive the world we live in. Narratives (books, movies, folk tales, tv, etc.) are only part of the story, but they are key and powerful parts.

I couldn't read past book 2 but from what I've heard and read from those who have read it (and online bits), not only does she not break out of it, but she spends 4 damn books BEGGING him to turn her into a vamp too. She wants to be as much like him and be able to be with him eternally, even if it means losing her soul. Of course she never has the blood-thirst, once she is a vamp, so it works out perfectly because how else could it work out?

:vomit:

So no, not only does she never break free, she wholeheartedly believes it's the only way to be. And she sacrifices everyone in her life to get it.

I shall join you at the vomitorium.

It's not just these books (though they very much touch a nerve with me.) It's soaps (which I can't stand), and a lot of TV shows... I loved ones like Without a Trace until it became less about solving crimes and more about the drama between couples. I can't stand CSI Miami because it's gone the same way.

Seriously, where are the healthy books, movies, and tv shows? Where are the shows where two people work together, have problems but learn to communicate, etc? Why isn't there a market for that?

:soapbox:

NaNoWriMo is in just 4.5 months. I'll see what I can come up with. Because, you know, I'm such a great writer.

So I don't like the way my DDs obsessed over these books either. FWIW, they seem to be over the obsession and have moved on to other things ... such is real life.

But I agree with those of you who recognize the fail in local church leaders inserting themselves between us and our children. Happened in my ward and I can tell you ... my DDs think less of the church for it. Yay, church! Had I been a true and faithful (to the church) father I would have done some damage control but I'm not so I didn't. Besides, it even pissed my DW off that they basically told our DDs that their parents were doing the wrong thing to allow them to read the books.

Hah. I'd say "screw-em" but they already screwed themselves. Thank you Stephanie Meyer for making this all possible!

Yeah, what Bel said, lol.

Fig and I were talking about this, so I could come up with an example, and we think this might work.

Transformers the movie. No guy really thinks (I hope) that their car will turn into a giant robot and they will get sucked into some huge intergalatic struggle in which they figure out complex clues and save the world from evil robots the army can't even blow up.

I don't think that I will sucked into some war, but if I could buy a car that would turn into a giant flying robot so I could get over the traffic and get to work quicker-- I would so be there. Bonus points if it has lasers on its head and some kinda big saw.

That must have an interesting story attached to it.

Big green hugs,
