I got this from the Mormon Curtain. It had a very interesting link about the bullshit college kids are getting from the church at the Institute of Religion:

http://institute.lds.org/manuals/eterna ... others.asp

Sure makes me determined not to have this shit parroted to my daughter who still has a few years before going into Young Womens!

And I'd sure love to do this to the jackass writers who compose this bullshit in the first place! :rollingpin: :hammer:

But boy do I feel like :banghead:

Any thoughts about this shit????

Total sexist, chauvinistic bullshit. What makes me sick is I used to believe this crap. I will say that in my opinion it is good to have at least one parent in the home rather than put kids in daycare, but I sure as hell don't think it matters which parent it is, and I also understand that that is just my opinion and it has worked for us but may not work for other people. The church would cause a lot less stress in peoples lives if they just encouraged parents to do their best with what they have and not try to micromanage peoples lives.
No wonder so many Mormon women are on anti-depressants!

I wondered, as I read it, "Are these the most misogynistic church leaders? Or just the most quotable?"

I still remember Richard G. Scott's talk where he compared women wearing "men's clothing" to being immodest. AND he tried to get the young men to help him convince the girls to dress properly. :roflnew:

Fuck. That.

I had a whole post typed up and I accentally deleted it. -_-

That entire page is sickening. And there's no way to brush it away as old teachings when it's right there with some pretty current leaders.

Quote:
Elder Richard G. Scott

“President Benson has taught that a mother with children should be in the home. He also said, ‘We realize . . . that some of our choice sisters are widowed and divorced and that others find themselves in unusual circumstances where, out of necessity, they are required to work for a period of time. But these instances are the exception, not the rule’ (Ezra Taft Benson, To the Mothers in Zion [pamphlet, 1987], pp. 5–6). You in these unusual circumstances qualify for additional inspiration and strength from the Lord. Those who leave the home for lesser reasons will not” (in Conference Report, Apr. 1993, 42–43; or Ensign, May 1993, 34 ).

As if the other lies they spewed weren't damaging enough (and they are!), they are now telling female members that God will basically leave them if they work outside of the home without an emergency situation.

Holy hell.

Take a close look at the dates on those quotes and look at who is being quoted. The most recent quote is from 1998- 11 years ago- and the oldest is from 1942! BKP is the ONLY person quoted who is still alive. The church just keeps recycling these little lessons and quotes verbatim, without update. I noticed this when I was teaching seminary and the manual was full of Benson quotes. He was dead before my seminary students were born. Relevant to them? What do you think? Not so much.
It's just a mindless retread- and an indication that the current crop of "leaders" really isn't saying anything.

There have always been working women and there always will be, as long as there is a mortgage to pay and the kids need shoes. the callousness of this given the current economic situation is remarkable. Quotes from 1942! When wartime employment of women was considered a patriotic thing!

Idiots.

Not in Utah, I suppose. I wonder, with all the good press they gave the Nazis before the war, how much Utahns hated the Japanese vs. hating the Germans.

Was wartime women's employment in Utah considered a good thing? I'd like to find some editorials or letters from that time period to see. Now, of course, everyone would just echo the proper thing to say.

I know a couple that are friends of mine. They are TBM.

The woman is very good at physical working trades. She is an accomplished plumber, woodworker and kitchen designer. She loves it. She loves designing stuff.

The man loves to cook and garden. He loves playing with his kids and messing around with them. He is really just a big kid, and I don't think there is anything he would rather do than play with his kids.

She stays home and he works a successful career, but one that he is not totally happy with. Meanwhile, I sense that she gets a bit annoyed at being home taking care of the kids all day. They both, like most right now-- are frustrated with their money situation. I think she is further frustrated that she is not in a position to go back to school and work on her career goals.

Now she could be making good money in a few different trades, better than him perhaps. He could probably still work a bit (part time freelance) if he were to stay home.

Do they do something like this? No. They are told that her special place is in the home, and his is at work providing for the family. So that is what they do-- no matter how miserable they are doing it.

MoLeaders ONLY teach/speak in terms of 'THE ideal'...

IF their talks, speeches, lessons were in terms of Real Life, it would be a serious let-down for the faithful.
This is / LD$, Inc. sends a serious 'Screw You' to those who have trouble swallowing their palp OR being in Compliance - Conformance to it...

Take away all the mothers who are nurses (even just those with kids at home)? You'd see the most serious health-care CRISES the WORLD has EVER SEEN; the the GAs KNOW THAT.

just sayin'

If it weren't for the fact that this is published by the church, I would have thought I was reading anti-mormon literature given all those sexist quotes assembled in one place.

Thanks for posting Liberal Mormon.... it really is sickening. I feel like printing it up and leaving it around for my TBM daughters to read, but I am scared how they would take it. That is why this stuff is so toxic.

Were they actually looking in the windows of my house growing up??? That is exactly what was taught at my house. Gag.

My kids will know:

That women are smart and valuable for more than their ability to birth babies.

That women are just as capable as men to make a decent living.

That women DO have and SHOULD have a choice about the direction their life should go.

That women are not second class citizens who are the only ones capable of changing a diaper.

That women working outside the home are not only there so they can buy a fancy fucking piano.

Assholes.

“. . . I beg of you, you who could and should be bearing and rearing a family: Wives, come home from the typewriter, the laundry, the nursing, come home from the factory, the café.

Not that these aren't respectable jobs, but do you notice the only kind of jobs that are mentioned here? Yeah, nursing would require education, but the rest? As if not only do they not want the women working, but the value they place on their possible role in the working world is as subservient and uneducated support staff. GRRRRR. I'm not saying those jobs are bad or demeaning. I am in a job right now that is far from my dreams and aspirations. But to think that a woman would consider her "value" in working at a laundromat...blech! I'm certain that most women working at the laundromat are there because their family NEEDS the money, not because it was their goal in life to be laundresses. Fuck that shit! What a stupid assertion! Of course it isn't suggested that the woman might OWN the laundromat! Or the cafe! Or be the director at the hospital. Or be a doctor or financial consultant or scientist or linguist.

And...I have been a stay at home mom and LOVED it. However, that doesn't mean that is my only goal or aspiration in life or that I feel people who choose (or don't have a choice) something else aren't doing what is right for their own situation!

ARGH!

If they weren't specific, you might have to think for yourself. And, we know where that leads!!!

I just hope I can do this to my boys...sometimes I have a hard time to make them respect me. Fucking church.

Some days I am just hopeless, thinking maybe it's too late... =(
