Decided to take a break from MADb, and come here instead.

Welcome, Mike!

Pull up a chair, and tell us a little about yourself!

Thanks, Rico.

Born into the Church, pioneer ancestry on all sides. Served a mission, got involved in apologetics, joined FAIR (wrote a couple articles for FAIR, and a book review for FARMS), intended to enter a career teaching for the CES, then suddenly lost my faith. Left the Church and FAIR, but eventually came to terms with the fact that I remain a cultural Mormon. I now consider myself to be an agnostic secular humanist cultural Mormon. I continue my involvement in Mormon Studies, although my approach now is secular. Got my MA in Liberal Arts (with a focus in religious studies), wrote my thesis on "The Development of the LDS Church's Attitude Toward the Cross," and am having an expanded revision of my thesis published through John Whitmer Books very soon. The title is "Banishing the Cross: The Emergence of a Mormon Taboo." I have spoken at several Mormon studies conferences and symposia the last few years. Hopefully my paper proposal to MHA is accepted, and I will be able to speak on the "Mormon Endowment and the Christianization of Freemasonry." I am applying to PhD programs now, with the plan to teach History of Religion in North America at the University level. My research interests include folk-magic, freemasonry, religious symbolism, and Mormon/Catholic discourse. I have been involved in online Mormon discussions for 15 years, started when ZLMB was hot place to be. After ZLMB's fall, I followed the migration to the FAIR boards, and then to MADb and MDb (their exile forum, run by Dr. Shades). As you can see below, my blog is culturalmormoncafeteria.blogspot.com

That's about it. If you want to know anything else about me, ask away!

I am fascinated by the history as well, I'd love to read both your pieces on the cross and the endowment! I've never really understood or studied up on why the cross was such a taboo, but I've always been curious. Welcome! I am looking forward to reading your posts! I love informative and educational posts! :)

Thanks Doubtingmo and McLuckin.

McLuckin,
If you are interested, Deseret News' "Mormon Times" and the Salt Lake Tribune ran stories on my research. You can read the articles here:
http://www.deseretnews.com/article/7053 ... cross.html
http://wildernesschristianity.net/info/ ... Cross.html
The book should be published this Spring.

For now, though, I have little time to spare on massage boards, since I need to work on my MHA paper (which was accepted BTW) and another paper that I will be presenting at Sunstone West. The paper for Sunstone is titled "Ancient Metal Records: Was the Notion Preposterous in Joseph Smith's Day?"

I intend to be a more active participant here when things settle down for me.

I'd love to hear more on your sudden loss of faith. Also, if you'd like to share your fair articles or the subject that'd be great too.

Hi Mike!

I was Froggie on MADB until I was banned for accusing mormons of having an inverted moral compass. So I posted as Oracle for a while until Oracle was banned for crossing a mod on their PMS day. So I have been Staccato for a while. I only post on rare occasion so I have managed to escape the mod wrath for a while. I did, however, claim that Joseph was really having a simple partial epileptic seizure in the grove that one fine day. It is standing. I guess they are in that mode where they have run off good critics so they are being more tolerant.

I love your stuff about the crosses and have posted links to your article here, there and everywhere for several years now. :)

Welcome to FLAK!

Big green hugs,

Froggie

Sounds like a very interesting book. I enjoyed the articles - I had always wondered about the aversion to the cross.
