Gotta do something when you quit going to church, right? I've been involved in local political stuff. This is particularly amusing because I am a Democrat living in one of the very most Republican parishes / counties in the country, rated by the daily caller as #31 in the top places to live if you are a conservative.

The women's club made a cookbook. ALL PROFITS, ALL PROFITS, ALL PROFITS will go to established non-profit organizations who feed hungry people in St. Tammany Parish - Second Harvest, Mt. Olive AME Feeding Mission, Covington Food Bank, Angel Food, etc. After we pay for printing (this is print on demand, so no minimum) and taxes (we are not an NPO) that will be be $12/book. I would like to sell 5000 books. The lead author wants to be on The Daily Show. I think my goal is more reachable.

This is not a normal "let's make a cookbook!" cookbook. The lead writer has a monthly humor column in New Orleans Magazine and has three books published. The book designer is a professional who does books for places like the MoMA in NY. My involvement was mostly reading reading reading and editing editing editing recipes, but at the last moment I was drafted/volunteered to write the section introductions. We are still working on getting "peek inside" and stuff on the Amazon page. We had zero budget, so there are no pictures, but it's still a BEAUTIFUL book.

I prefer the term "hawking" for this. A shiller implies that you are duping us. A hawker is just selling wares.

Yes, but try as I could, I wasn't able to find an alliterative synonym for "shameless" to go with "hawking." So "shameless shilling" it will remain.

Look, I've been around here a LONG FUCKING TIME, and these people are my friends, and this is in the goddamn miscellaneous section. I am telling my long-time friends about a project I worked on and that I'm proud of and that they might want to support because it's for a very good cause. But you know, I busted my ass on this, and I wrote some of the test, and I'm damn proud of it. I don't get a fucking dime from this; and it's not in any way, shape or form a Mormon activity.

Nanna, I'd love to buy your cookbook when I have more moola.

Polly, I noticed that you sometimes ascribe negative motives behind commonplace (for us) things around here. You did this when I needed financial help, too, implying I was not in true need (when one of the mods actually did the asking for me). Often newbies find it helpful to read the posts for a while, get familiar with the FLAK customs, and get to know everyone better before they question anyone's motives.
