Hello everyone,

After many years content with rolling my eyes at the far away mormon world, reveling in my former-mormon status, a long-lost rediscovered friend herded me toward this site. After reading "The Devil controls the Water" thread, I knew I had to join and return.

My bio

born Michigan - moved to Mississippi at age 10, mother was lonely in her unhappy marriage a few years before I was born and allowed some cute mormons in the house traveling by her Kentucky home.
My downfall? Also falling for those cute mormon boys serving their missions in Mississippi as I was growing up. Went to Rick's, then to Peru on a mission. Was promised by bishops, General Authorities, Mission Presidients, and Stake Presidents that my homosexual feelings would go away if I . . . (insert behavior of choice - - example - served a righteous mission; stopped listening to rock music; stopped masterbating; masturbated with thoughts of women in my head; paid tithing; etc. etc.)

Graduated BYU - moved away from mormondom, came out, dropped my name from the roles but was told that I couldn't quit becase they were excommunicating me, had sex (in that order), and lived happily ever after (really).

Now an attorney in DC and loving being the gay expert on mormons for all those curious about Mitt Romney.

Thanks for having me.

Jack

No kidding. Can I be the token straight person?

On a more serious note, my wife's gay ex-Mormon uncle lives in D.C. in a similar line of work. I wonder if your paths have crossed?

Welcome, welcome.

I hope you have fun.

What has the reaction of those who have been asking you questions generally been in relation to Mitt, homosexuality and mormonism?

I don't claim to be a Mitt expert, but most in my circle think he's the worst kind of opportunist who is willing to say whatever he believes will benefit him at the moment. To allay any partisan fears, we say similar things about Hillary.

As for mormonism in general, most have now read Under the Banner of Heaven and have a sense of basic dogmatic wierdness. As the Kolob/god having sex with Mary type stories emerge, it should ellicit major eye rolls. Usually the question is "Mormons really take this seriously?" to which I assure them that many do.

It's almost like gays would have more personally relevant proof that the church isnt fabulous or something.

I will confess to being the one who pointed Jack in this direction. We were friends at BYU. The punchline is that Jack was in the closet when I knew him at school, but now I'm the one in the closet about my disbelief in LDS Inc., which is why I'm undercover as Zim.

Ah, delicious irony...

You are missing gallows humor about how horribly the LDS Church treats our gay friends and children.

Homosexual feeling going away if you stop listening to rock music? That is a new low for these kooky GAs (General Absurditites). So some lyrically hetero charged rock bands (Motley Crue,The Cars,et al) make those gay...whatever! :P

Welcome to the boards. :-) I just resigned and had my "no longer a member" letter sent last week. It feels so good to not have home teachers bothering me anymore. I feel bad for the bothering I did for a few inactives when I did my own home teaching.
