Great story, NAM.

I remember after going through the temple with my uncle and aunt the first time, they took me out to dinner and kept repeating: "Wasn't that great? Didn't that open your eyes?"

I smiled and nodded, while in the meantime my brain was in overdrive WTF mode. After being groped by an old guy, dressed in a goofy toga and baker's cap with a green apron, and watching a hypnotic movie, then dragged through a piece of silk with holes cut in it by some other old guy, I wasn't sure what to think. I'm glad I finally decided exactly what to think about it - and that is loud laughter at what I actually did when I was 19 years old.

It's great to have you here.

ETA: What part of LA are you in? That's where I was born and raised. If you don't wish to answer me on the board, you cam PM me.

After the endowment ceremony, I was pretty sure it was all a crock. I gave it the old college try for several months, attending weekly, trying to lessen the disturbed, slightly nauseous feeling the whole temple experience gave me.

One evening, I was done. There was no inciting moment, just a quiet realization that the whole thing was a phenomenally elaborate ruse.

Gosh, does that sound familiar.

Even after the temple, I didn't have a WTF moment. I had the still small voice that said "That's it? That can't be right?"

Actually, I did have a WTF moment, years later when I was reading up on Mark Hofmann. and I came across mention of the Kinderhook plates and Solomon Spaulding and a few other flecks of history.

Hi NAMMy pie!! AWESOME intro. I am glad you were also an inquiring mind at a wee young age. I sometimes think people don't believe me when I say I was embarrassed by mormonism from my youngest years, and that I tried to say "no" to getting dunked at eight years of age (I was overruled of course).

Glad to have you here my friend!! We'll have to analyse each other's problems from The Why years. (Yes, I have my theories too....)

:peace:

I agree with Wry. Great introduction. I wish that I would have been as smart as you and figured it out in college. Good for you and my admiration!

Yeah, my eyes sure were opened. I hadn't been expecting the elderly groping. And if the contents of that film were inspired, shouldn't the acting have risen to the level of at least mediocre?

I'm in Los Feliz near the charred remains of Griffith Park... :bawl:

It's nice to be here... and I can't wait for the analysis.

Thanks, Hellmut. I'm really glad I didn't waste any more time. I see so many people who get themselves stuck for so many years and it makes me feel very lucky.

I am new here, so nice to meet you...

I, too, had the "wtf???" thoughts in Sunday School. When in was in Young Womens I remember turning to my teacher, raising my eyebrows and saying, "You have GOT to be kidding me!" She never said a word when I skipped church either.
