I thought some here would like to know if they don't already.

Jerald Tanner had been suffering from Alzheimer's for some time. Sadly, he passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2006.

Here's the link.

Wow. Hope he is at peace, and his family finds some also.

I never met him, but he and Sandra changed my life.

They were a voice of reason in the days when Ed Decker passed for truth.
I'm so glad that there was someone who could speak to my intellect in a calm and thoughtful way.

Now there was a real prophet. He spoke out against untruths in high places, he fearlessly fought for what was right, he never made much money (compared with any alternative career for a man of his talents) but he kept preaching the message that burned within him.

For years the Tanners were the only place that most people could find photocopies of key church documents. And they kept the torch burning for decades, until finally the Internet appeared and made these things available to all. The Tanners deserve a major place in Mormon history.

My first experience with solid Mormon history was Mormonism-Shadow or Reality. It presented page after page of photocopies of original Mormon documents. I learned more from that book in one weekend (it was borrowed from a friend) than from a lifetime studying approved church curriculum.

See? That's what happens when you fight against the One True Church.

On a serious note, I took some pride in the fact that I was able to completely apostatize without ever reading the Tanners' stuff. All I knew of them was that they were career anti-Mormons--as well as devout Christians--and so as a waning believer I was suspicious of their agenda.

Once I was safely on this side of belief I read everything I could find of theirs and was impressed, to say the least. And their role in the Hoffman scandal was classic!

My condolences to the Tanner family. In fact, this is a loss to the entire DAMU.

I remember my parents speaking about the Tanners with obvious disdain in their voices, about how they fought the Church, and turned their back on their heritage.

The implication, of course, was that they did so for the money. 'Cause, you know, "antis" make a lot of money on their so-called lies.

The stigma surrounding the Tanners was so great in my mind, that I remember the first time I went to their bookstore. I had this slight paranoid notion that I might be getting videotaped by the COB, or something. It was funny.

Once I was in their store, I came to realize how ridiculously low their prices are! Hell, I couldn't copy their books at Kinkos for cheaper than I can buy them off their shelves. There's absolutely no way they're getting rich off that material.

I sure acknowledge the contribution they've made. They were very helpful in aiding to my epiphany. And for that, I'm eternally grateful.

I'm laughing. Yeah. I had several looks up and down the street before I even walked in the direction of the house.

And I also remember hoping that the Tanners wouldn't notice that I was wearing garments. Yeah, it's pretty funny now.
